Quick answer
An office pod is a freestanding, sound-reducing booth that gives people a private place to take calls, focus or meet inside an open office. A 1-person pod from an established brand starts at about $5,500–$13,000 before shipping and installation. Look for a verified speech level reduction of 25 dB or more (ISO 23351-1 Class B or better), strong ventilation, and a design that meets your local fire code.
The short version:
- Most offices should start with 1-person phone booths. They fix the biggest problem (loud calls on open floors) at the lowest cost per person.
- Insist on ISO 23351-1 test data. It’s the only apples-to-apples way to compare acoustics.
- Budget for the total installed cost, not the list price.

What is an office pod?
An office pod (also called an office phone booth, privacy pod, focus pod or acoustic pod) is a prefabricated, enclosed room you can place anywhere on an office floor. Most have:
- Sound-absorbing walls and a glass door
- Built-in ventilation fans and LED lighting
- A desk or seat, plus power and USB outlets
Unlike a built meeting room, a pod needs no construction. It’s delivered, assembled in hours to days, and can move with you when you change offices.
Why offices are buying them
Hybrid work changed how offices are used. As of May 2026, 52% of remote-capable U.S. employees work hybrid, according to Gallup. That means offices are packed on peak days, everyone is on video calls at once, and there aren’t enough rooms. Pods add private space fast.
Analysts estimate the global office pods market at about $1.0 billion in 2026, growing to about $1.65 billion by 2031 (roughly 10.6% a year) (Mordor Intelligence).
Types of office pods (and which one you need)
| Type | Capacity | Typical use | Starting price range* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone booth / 1-person pod | 1 | Calls, video meetings | ~$5,500–$13,000 |
| Focus / work pod | 1 | Deep work, longer sessions | similar to or above phone booths |
| Meeting pod | 2–4 | Huddles, interviews, hybrid meetings | ~$10,500–$30,000 |
| Open / semi-open pod | 1–4 | Visual privacy, casual meetings | often lower (less acoustic performance) |
| Budget pods (online marketplaces) | 1–4 | Home offices, small teams | varies widely, often under $5,000 |

Rule of thumb: if your problem is noise from calls, buy 1-person phone booths first. If your problem is no free meeting rooms, add 2–4 person meeting pods.
Acoustics: how “soundproof” are office pods?
No pod is 100% soundproof. Good pods reduce speech enough that people outside can’t follow a conversation, and that’s what matters.
The number to ask for: ISO 23351-1
ISO 23351-1:2020 is the lab standard that measures how much a pod reduces speech. The result is called speech level reduction (DS,A), in decibels (ISO). Pods are grouped into classes:
| ISO 23351-1 class | Speech level reduction | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | more than 33 dB | Excellent. Confidential calls in a loud office |
| A | 30–33 dB | Very good. Private conversations |
| B | 25–30 dB | Good. Speech privacy in a typical office |
| C / D | below 25 dB | Limited. Better for focus than for confidential calls |
Class thresholds per manufacturer summaries of the standard (Hushoffice, Meavo).
Watch out: many budget listings quote an “Rw 35 dB” or “30 dB soundproof” rating. Rw measures a wall panel’s sound insulation, not the performance of the whole pod with its door, gaps and vents. It is not comparable to an ISO 23351-1 result. Ask the seller for the ISO report.
Ventilation: the spec most buyers forget
A pod is a small, sealed box. Without strong airflow, the air turns stuffy fast: carbon dioxide rises and people get drowsy.
- A normal office room is often designed for around 3–4 air changes per hour (ACH), which is inadequate for a tiny enclosed pod (B&H Ergonomic).
- For 1-person pods, many specialists recommend 15–20+ ACH, and high-performance pods exceed 30 ACH (B&H Ergonomic, Onmuse).
What to ask: the airflow (CFM or m³/h) or ACH, the fan noise level inside the pod, and whether the fans are controlled by an occupancy sensor.
Fire code, accessibility and power
Fire code and sprinklers
This is the most common reason a pod order gets delayed. In the U.S., fire protection is set by your local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), usually referencing NFPA 13.
- NFPA 13 allows sprinklers to be omitted in small, isolated, temporarily occupied enclosures that don’t extend to the ceiling, generally with an interior area of 24 sq ft or less (ROOM compliance guide).
- Compliance guides also call for clearance (commonly 18 inches) between the top of the pod and ceiling sprinklers.
- Local rules can be stricter. San Francisco, for example, requires sprinkler protection inside any booth or pod exceeding 4 feet in any direction (SF Fire).
What to do: ask each manufacturer for its compliance packet (fire, electrical, materials) and send it to your building manager or fire marshal before you order.
Accessibility (ADA)
If a pod is the only private space available, consider an ADA-accessible model (wider door, turning space, accessible controls). Several brands offer them (B&H compliance guide).
Power and data
Most pods plug into a standard outlet. Check the cord length and exit point, and whether your Wi-Fi reaches inside the pod. Glass and acoustic panels can weaken the signal.
How much do office pods cost?
1-person pods: starting list prices (USD, October 2026)
| Model | Starting price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Zenbooth Solo | $5,490 | Zenbooth |
| ROOM Phone Booth | $6,495 | ROOM |
| Bureau Tuesday | $7,499 | Bureau |
| Framery One Compact | $9,690 | Framery |
| Framery One | $13,090 | Framery |
Starting prices for the base configuration, before shipping, installation and tax. Prices change often; confirm with the seller.
The total installed cost
- Shipping: can add hundreds of dollars. Zenbooth, for example, lists a flat $650 per booth to the contiguous U.S. (Zenbooth).
- Installation: some pods are designed for DIY assembly in 1–2 hours; others need a two-person crew. Zenbooth lists optional professional installation at $490 per Solo (Zenbooth), and Framery’s prices exclude delivery and installation.
- Lead time: quick-ship models can arrive in 1–2 weeks; custom colors and made-to-order builds often take 6–11 weeks (B&H Ergonomic).
- Extras: sprinklers or strobes if your AHJ requires them, accessories, and future relocation.
Example: a Zenbooth Solo at $5,490 plus $650 shipping and $490 installation comes to about $6,630 before tax.
How many office pods do you need?
There’s no official ratio. As a planning rule of thumb (ours, not an industry standard), plan for one private space for every 6–15 people in the office on a peak day:
- Call-heavy teams (sales, support, recruiting): about 1 pod per 6 people
- Typical hybrid teams: about 1 per 10
- Light-call teams: about 1 per 15
Subtract any bookable phone rooms you already have. Start with fewer pods, check usage for a month, then add.
Office pod buying checklist

| Moves with you | Yes | No |
| Acoustic performance | Lab-tested, predictable | Depends on construction |
| Lease impact | Furniture (movable asset) | Leasehold improvement |
FAQ
How much does an office pod cost?
Most 1-person pods from established brands start between about $5,500 and $13,000 before shipping and installation. Meeting pods for 2–4 people start around $10,500 and can pass $25,000. Budget pods sold online can cost much less, usually with less verified acoustic performance.
Are office pods soundproof?
No pod is fully soundproof, but good pods reduce speech by 25–35 dB (ISO 23351-1 Class B to A+). That’s enough to keep conversations private in a normal open office.
Do office pods need sprinklers?
It depends on your local fire authority. NFPA 13 allows sprinklers to be omitted in small enclosures (generally 24 sq ft interior or less) that don’t reach the ceiling, but some cities require them anyway. Check with your building before ordering.
How long does it take to get an office pod?
Quick-ship models can arrive in 1–2 weeks. Made-to-order or custom finishes often take 6–11 weeks, plus installation.
